U.S. EMBASSY HOSTS SECOND SEMINAR ON INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

he U.S. Embassy in Dar es Salaam hosted the second of a series of seminars for Information Technology (IT) professionals in Tanzania on October 28. Over 45 guests from Dar es Salaam, Arusha, and Zanzibar attended to share their experiences and ideas for using technology to improve IT operations in businesses and government offices. The theme for this year's seminar was "Security and Costs Saving."


The U.S. Embassy in Dar es Salaam hosted the second of a series of seminars for Information Technology (IT) professionals in Tanzania on October 28. Over 45 guests from Dar es Salaam, Arusha, and Zanzibar attended to share their experiences and ideas for using technology to improve IT operations in businesses and government offices. The theme for this year's seminar was "Security and Cost Saving."
With the fast pace of IT industry and the unique challenges of operating in Dar es Salaam, the opportunity to exchange ideas assists Tanzanian managers and IT administrators adapt to a constantly-changing environment and implement technologies that lead to cost savings and preserving the environment. This second seminar featured presentations by U.S. Embassy speakers titled "Social Media & Security," "Green the New Color in IT," and "Working Across Cultures."
Senior Embassy Systems Administrator Sajjad Gulamali said, "We hope these presentations start a conversation between a variety of businesses and government officials about how to use technology to make information easier to access, share, use and lead to cost saving." Embassy Assistant Senior Manager for IT Murtaza H Lalji discussed green waste disposal procedures as a tool to protect the environment and enhance IT operations.
Embassy Information Management Officer Walter Cunningham explained that the seminar series intended to facilitate information exchange: "We wanted to establish a forum in Tanzania by sharing some of the things that work for us in the U.S. Department of State and seek better ways of accomplishing our IT goals in partnership with Tanzanian professionals. We look forward to our continued partnership with this key sector which is leading Tanzania's growth in the information field."

The program featured a presentation on virtualization by Mr. Ali Thawer, one of the founders of Bell Communications Ltd who presently serves as a CEO. Mr. Thawer recently visited the United States of America under the International Visitors Leadership Program (IVLP) "A New Beginning: Entrepreneurship and Business Innovation." In his remarks, he discussed virtualization and his visit to the U.S., where he established professional ongoing contacts with 30 colleagues from other nations.
Guest of honor Ms. Elizabeth Mzagi, Acting Director of the Tanzania Communications Regulatory authority, told the audience that the Government of Tanzania is currently developing policy on green waste to protect the environment. The first seminar for IT professionals was held on December 4, 2009. The U.S. Embassy hopes to organize future regular forums and welcomes presentation submissions from Tanzanian colleagues in the IT field.
